
Tyrannosaurus rex: anatomy of a tyrant
Few animals have been measured, modelled and argued over as thoroughly as Tyrannosaurus rex. Roughly fifty reasonably complete skeletons are known, and each new one narrows the range of what this animal could and could not do.
The bite
Estimates of bite force cluster around 35,000 newtons at the back teeth — enough to crush bone rather than slice through flesh. The evidence is not only mechanical modelling:
- Triceratops pelvises with punctures matching tyrannosaur tooth spacing
- coprolites packed with splintered bone
- teeth built like thick pegs, not blades
Could it see you?
The skull narrows towards the snout, giving overlapping fields of view. Binocular vision of around 55° is comparable to a modern hawk. This matters for the old scavenger-versus-hunter argument: depth perception is far more useful when closing on prey than when finding a carcass.
The honest answer is that no large predator alive today refuses free meat. T. rex almost certainly did both, in whatever proportion the landscape allowed.
How fast
Early reconstructions had it sprinting at 70 km/h. Muscle-mass models and bone-loading limits have brought that down sharply — most current estimates sit between 17 and 27 km/h, a brisk run rather than a chase. A six-tonne animal falling at speed breaks ribs, and there was no evolutionary upside to that.

What remains genuinely open is behaviour: whether individuals hunted together, how much of the diet was carrion, and whether the famous "Sue" pathologies came from fighting or from disease.
