The Cretaceous flower revolution

Flowering plants show up late. For most of the age of dinosaurs there were none at all; then, within about 30 million years of the mid-Cretaceous, they went from marginal to dominant. Darwin called the speed of it an "abominable mystery", and the phrase stuck.

Why they won

The advantages compound:

  1. Faster life cycles — some angiosperms complete a generation in weeks, gymnosperms take years.
  2. Animal pollination — pollen delivered to a target beats scattering it on the wind.
  3. Fruit — animals carry seeds away and deposit them with fertiliser.
  4. Better plumbing — vessel elements move water more efficiently than tracheids.

A co-evolution story

Bees appear in the fossil record close behind flowers, and the relationship reshaped both. Flower shape, colour, scent and nectar chemistry are all, in effect, advertising aimed at a specific customer.

Roughly 87 per cent of flowering plant species alive today depend on animal pollinators. That dependency began in the Cretaceous.

Did it change the dinosaurs?

Plausibly. The spread of angiosperms overlaps with the rise of hadrosaurs and ceratopsians — herbivores with sophisticated chewing batteries suited to tougher, faster-growing foliage. Whether flowers drove those teeth or the teeth made those plants worth eating is a chicken-and-egg problem that the fossil record cannot yet resolve.
